On 15 November 2023 the training “Organic Module (UA). Labelling of organic products. State logo for organic products” was held. The event was organised on the initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine together with the certification body Organic Standard and with the support of Switzerland.
The training was opened with welcoming words by Maryna Kyslytska, Head of the State Policy Division for Organic Production of the Food Security and Excise Products Directorate of the Department of State Policy in the Field of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine: “An important and challenging stage of creating a state logo for organic products has been completed, and the fact that this logo is already being used to label products is an important identifier of the success of the Ukrainian organic market development processes, to which all involved went for a long way. This training is important for both market operators and the state on the way to building a system with proper state regulation and from which everyone, both producers and consumers, will benefit in practice. It is valuable that we are now all working to make the Ukrainian logo as recognisable as the Euroleaf”. Serhiy Halashevskyi, Director of the Organic Standard certification body, and Natalia Prokopchuk, Organic Component Coordinator of the Swiss-Ukrainian Program “Higher Value Added Trade Development in Organic Agriculture” as well welcomed the participants.
The main goal of the training was to inform operators, NGOs and service providers in the organic sector of Ukraine on the requirements and proper use of the state logo for organic products and labelling in general. More than 130 participants of the online training had the opportunity to get acquainted with the legislation of Ukraine in the field of organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products, namely the order of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine “On Approval of the State Logo for Organic Products”.
The topic of the proper use of the state logo for organic products has been gaining relevance since the State register of operators producing organic products under legal requirements in the field of organic production, circulation, and labelling of organic products, which is maintained by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, was launched in Ukraine. Currently, the operators from the register have already begun to label their products with the Ukrainian state logo, and it was timely to provide them with knowledge on its practical use.
The participants learned about the legal aspects and liability for violation of legislation in the field of organic production and misuse of the state logo from Yulia Movchan, an expert in lawmaking and lawyer-developer of organic legislation of Ukraine, PhD. Olena Manziuk, Deputy Head of the Certification, Standardisation and Quality Department of the Organic Standard certification body, shared her knowledge of the practical aspects and rules for labelling organic products in accordance with Ukrainian legislation.
